How to Knit a Poncho?
Ponchos are extremely practical and simple to make, especially if you know how to knit. They are very warm and perfect for the winter months. While ponchos are suitable for all seasons, they are particularly well-suited for winter. Your arms are free and much more mobile. Here’s how to make a wool poncho!
Ponchos can be knitted using the following pattern:
Necessary Supplies
- 12 balls of yarn
- 1 pair of size 6 knitting needles
- 1 yarn needle
Knitting Steps
On size 6.5 needles, cast on 76 stitches for the women’s poncho. Knit 2 rows in garter stitch.
Then knit 76 cm in 1/1 ribbing, ending with 8 garter stitch stitches. When your work measures 76 cm, knit 3 rows in garter stitch, then fold the stitches from the third row.
You now have a large rectangle. Repeat this process for the second rectangle.
To choose a poncho, you should consider these 4 factors:
The fabric:
There is a wide variety of ponchos on the market, but not all are equally comfortable or warm. If you want a heavy and warm winter poncho, we recommend wool or cashmere. Polyester and acrylic are excellent options if you want a light and warm poncho. Ponchos made from waterproof materials are also available. You should wear them when it rains or while hiking, for example. These materials are suitable for rainy seasons or hikes.
The color:
Choosing can be difficult when it comes to colorful ponchos, as they come in a wide variety of colors. On one hand, you can buy ponchos featuring classic ethnic patterns, such as checks or stripes. On the other hand, you can purchase solid-colored ponchos. To help you choose the right color, imagine how a particular patterned poncho would look with your usual outfits. You can also choose a poncho simply because you like its color.
However, be careful with patterns that make a person appear taller or shorter!
Your body shape:
Ponchos that are a bit too short are a poor choice for tall people, so choose ones that reach mid-thigh. If you are petite, you may appear stocky and further shorten your silhouette if you wear a long poncho. Choose cashmere or fur, for example, if you are a woman with curves. Flannel or wool are good choices if you are looking for a poncho that drapes elegantly. Don’t “puff up” your silhouette by choosing fabrics that are not fluid enough.
The cut:
Today, there is a variety of poncho cuts to choose from, in addition to the basic styles. Ponchos can be purchased in a V-neck, turtleneck, or Peter Pan collar style, for example. There are hooded ponchos to keep your head warm. Ponchos are available in various lengths, from those that are short enough to suit nearly everyone to those that drape down to the ankles.

The Assembly
Divide your work into two sections. Place the garter stitch border on the left side of the first section. Place the other part with the garter stitch border at the bottom of the next section. The right side of the work should be sewn as indicated, connecting points A and A’ and B and B’.
After sewing the seam, fold down the upper edge of the left side and place it over the right side, aligning C with E and D with A/A’. Place CEG and DAF right sides together and align the letters when you turn the knitting to the right side. Your poncho will be complete when all the stitches are joined. Be sure to sew invisible stitches between CEG and DAF.
Your poncho is complete. You can finish it by adding fringes or by making a row of tight stitches at the neckline, depending on your preferences.
